Stonebrook’s south road keeps burial a civic duty even when the dead no longer rest easily. The route changes by degrees—from orchard grass and white path stones to hooded warnings, old family walls, and the first cemetery omen.

Funeral carts have right of way. Riders dismount, hunters cover trophies, and empty carts yield to the dead. Pull-offs and the maintained funeral halt make those customs visible without blocking the road. Blue lamps mean the route is fit for mourners; a hooded lamp means turn back.

Healthy orchard ground thins after the halt. Old family walls appear in broken lines, cold gathers in drainage hollows, and path stones sink into muted grass. The sequence matters: maintained burial ground becomes contested slowly enough for a traveler to understand what has changed.
