The Near Rift began as an abandoned survey cut. After gray heat and pale ash appeared behind its lowest wall, Stonebrook reopened only one inspected descent. It is a lesson in evidence and judgment, not a shortcut into the deep fracture.

Rope markers, old chain, cracked supports, and a cold survey fire show that the chamber had a human purpose before creatures returned to it. The descent is marked, the stair stays visible, and the first hostile territory begins only after a traveler has seen the way out.

Together they prove that strain beneath the wider Seal has reached ordinary mainland stone—and that deeper cracks remain deliberately closed. Carry that ash-marked proof to Northwatch, where rangers compare its soot pattern with mainland ward reports.
