Road Dispatches
The Long Road to the Obsidian Gate

Scene
At the Obsidian Gate apron, the long road stops asking politely.

Walk from Stonebrook’s rainy market to the Obsidian Gate, with each region sounding different and banked gold and depot supplies waiting on your return.
A traveler can leave Stonebrook under rain and keep walking until the road itself turns black. The journey passes the mainland freight routes and Northwatch, Gravewatch’s chapel road and crypt threshold, the veil-smoke arrival at the Ashen Catacomb Return Gate, and the first hostile crossings beyond the Seal before reaching the Obsidian Gate apron.
That distance is built to be read, not merely crossed. Market awnings, quarry shelters, blue homeward posts, chapel fire stores, return seals, and black-glass warning courts tell you where safety thins out. Every region has a way in, a reason to pause, and a retreat line worth remembering when the next pull goes wrong.
Stonebrook carries open air, distant bells, and its own town theme. Footsteps change from grass to stone, rain has its own onset, the wilderness opens into a broader score, and the Near Rift closes around cave air and water. Gravewatch brings a darker bed; the Ashen Seal answers with fire, ash, and the low body of lava beyond the wards.
Combat has a language of its own. Bow releases, spell starts and impacts, blocked blows, heavy hits, creature voices, low-health warning, death, pickups, and quest or level milestones carry distinct sounds. Listen for whether to press, recover, or turn before the interface does all the talking.
Back in Stonebrook, Mira’s Royal Bank is open. Carried gold and banked gold sit in one clear ledger, deposits and withdrawals remain separate, and every amount is reviewed before coin moves. The balance stays saved when the road carries you elsewhere, making the bank part of preparation rather than scenery beside the market.
Iva’s Crown Depot is open across the wagon turn. Carried supplies and stored non-coin stacks move in single or whole-stack actions, with shelf capacity and pages kept visible. Gold still belongs at Mira’s counter; salvage, ore, potions, bread, and the spare kit for the next expedition belong on Iva’s shelves, waiting when you return to the realm.
This is the rhythm of Ulna: hear the town behind you, bank what must survive, store what you cannot carry, and choose how far into the dark to push. Invite access remains limited; the Gallery, Bestiary Wall, and field guides can still help you choose a road before your name is called.
