The Ashen Seal Holds Its Line

Ulna Realm

Ashen Seal’s gate, arena bands and inner court were rebuilt as one family of stone, and the ground beneath them kept the marks of its own traffic.

Beyond the last blue lamp the road turns to ash, and the Ashen Seal keeps the only door standing in it. Its masonry was reworked as one family of stone: the same courses in the gate, in the arena bands, and in the inner court. A traveler can now tell a wall that will hold from a wall that has already failed, and can tell it from a distance, which is when the knowledge is worth having.

The ground beneath the walls was kept rather than replaced. Ash lies where feet have carried it. The old paving still shows through on the lines the wardens walk most, and thins out where nobody goes twice. A place that remembers its own traffic is easier to cross the second time than the first.

Five residents keep the court. Smiths at the forge, keepers at the supply tables, and the sentries who will not leave the wards while the wards still burn. They are not there to be spoken to once and forgotten. They are the reason the Seal is worth the walk back.

None of this is open ground. The Seal is development work, shown because it is finished enough to be honest about. What it settles is the rule the rest of the realm is being built to: every road that goes out must end somewhere that will still be standing when you return to it.
